Arriving in San Francisco we were greeted by Mac and Shirley, family friends of Jess, my girlfriend. We had met before a year earlier in St Ives and I remember thinking, ‘the next time we see each other it will be far away in San Francisco’. It was my birthday so there was beer, homemade burritos and carrot cake! Plus cards from back home in the UK, we had a great evening!
The next few days Martin went to stay with Lita in Berkley, a friend from back home who had moved out to SF a year ago while I stayed with Mac and Shirley.
San Francisco is such a great city, it gave us a chance to recuperate and experience much missed home comforts, towels, clean clothes and the joys of public transport.
Highlights of our trip to San Fran included:
Going out for really good sushi
Driving around the city at night
A tour of the city by car (thanks Shirley!)
Views from the top of the deYoung Museum
Japan town (mainly the hardware shops)
The Mission, a vibrant trendy part of town with a mix of homelessness and dot com gentrification
Lots of thrift stores (charity shops)
Eccentric but very enjoyable coffee
Steep climbs with views of the bay
Riding the cable car
Bobs donuts, an truly unhealthy delight just around the corner
Incredibly well dressed homeless
Thank you Mac, Shirley and Lita for being super hospitable hosts, we had a truly unforgettable week
