We arrived in Seattle on a hot summers day, leaving Canada and arriving in USA, things definitely felt different. Having been in Alaska and sensing that it wasn't quite like the continental US we were ready to find everything just like in the movies, cops, gangsters, drive thru everything not to mention people roller blading everywhere, we weren't disappointed! I don't have a photograph of any of that stuff, so heres a photo of Main street instead.
We had been kindly offered a place to stay by a couple, Mary and Ermarnno who had spent the last two years cycling around a good chunk of Asia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. We were made instantly welcome, with a home cooked meal and some local beers. It was an odd feeling, just under two months ago we had been sitting in Seattle airport hallucinating under the influence of jet lag and fear of the road ahead while eating fish and chips waiting for our flight to Alaska, it wasn't a long time ago but it felt like a lifetime.
Mary and Ermanno live in the Ballard area of Seattle, a fashionable area with an industrial feel; we had a great time exploring the area and visiting the local bars with Ermanno who took no pleasure at all in beating us both at table tennis multiple times.
Seattle had a lot of great breweries (pubs with beer making equipment) which served up really hoppy beers, its not to everyones taste but its growing on us and its a big hit over here. I don't have good photos of beers and breweries either, so here is some nice signage.
At the weekend we were lucky enough to be invited to go sailing with Ermanno and Mary on the Puget Sound an inlet of the Pacific Ocean that runs through Seattle. It was a great afternoon, we got to go sailing for the first time, bridges went up and down for us and nobody fell in, success!
Other exciting adventures included walking past the first Starbucks, the Pike Place Market, returning our leaking tent directly to the MSR headquarters and the Summer Solstice Parade.
We are now continuing our journey south towards Portland and the state of Oregon. Thank you so much for having us Mary and Ermanno, we had a seriously good time staying with you, we wish you the best of luck for all your future adventures! (sailing around the world?)
